I have found that whilst the cloud is very effective at solving business problems on a small scale, managing large amounts of your valuable company data is often done more effectively using on-premises object storage. Consider records kept for compliance: phone records, logs, customer data, research data - these can require large amounts of storage and can have a devastating effect if lost or compromised.
Research tells us that..
- On-premises storage is the most secure way to keep your sensitive data
- At scale, on-premises object storage is more cost-effective than cloud object storage
- Object storage can provide similar ease of use and deployment flexibility to the cloud
At one point during the holiday season, hackers had access to a company's cloud storage for approximately two weeks. This resulted in the credit card details of approximately 70 million customers being comprised. Worse still, was the damage to the company's reputation and credibility.
Today, ask yourself: “Am I putting data in the cloud because it is the path of least resistance? Or am I carefully evaluating the risks and putting my data in the most logical place?” With the rise of object storage, it can often make more sense to keep data archives and backup on premises and under your control.
